UpEnergy’s Electric Cooking Project Awarded A-Rating by BeZero Carbon
UpEnergy is proud to announce that our Beyond Biomass Electric Cooking Project in Tanzania has been awarded an A-rating by BeZero Carbon, one of the highest ratings currently assigned to any clean cooking project globally.
This achievement is especially significant in a sector where trust is hard-earned and many projects remain undervalued. While ratings are just one part of the broader integrity picture, they provide an important third-party signal, particularly when backed by robust digital monitoring, strong additionality, and real-world usage data.
The project is developed under the Gold Standard’s metered methodology for electric cooking, which uses integrated sensors to capture verified, real-time usage data. These insights allow for more accurate measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), enabling greater transparency and credibility across the carbon market.
But for UpEnergy, the value of this project extends well beyond emissions reductions. The program delivers uncredited climate benefits by helping households leapfrog fossil fuel-based cooking. It reduces deadly indoor air pollution, which kills more people annually than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. It also lowers household energy costs, saves time for women and families, and creates jobs across local communities in Tanzania.
“This rating is a meaningful signal that clean cooking, when done with integrity and innovation, can play a major role in equitable decarbonisation,” said Matt Evans, Chair of UpEnergy’s Board. “We see this not just as a project milestone, but as an invitation to bring more rigour, transparency, and ambition into the clean cooking space.”
The Beyond Biomass program is projected to distribute 250,000 metered electric cookstoves by 2028, with over 10,000 units already deployed. The project is also integrated with UpEnergy’s digital monitoring systems, enabling real-time data collection and verification at scale.
